Last night in between a screening of powerfully awkward new movie Cyrus (thumbs down) and the Jonsi concert (a socially acceptable version of Enya) I had dinner in Newtown. Unfortunately I forgot to pack all three of the books I’m half way through so I accidentally bought another one. I chose Radical Sydney because I read a great review of it in the Sydney Morning Herald. I only got through the introduction and one story last night but I am giantly in to this book. It’s written by radical educationist and historian Dr Terry Irving and his friend from Sydney Uni days Rowan Cahill. While Sydney is usually painted as a picture perfect, cosmopolitan city with relentlessly good food and weather this book is all about its dark and twisty past. All the fun stuff like organised crime, corruption, fascists, freethinkers, spies, saboteurs, protesters, poseurs, pubs, missing persons and even magazines (including my all time favourites Oz and The Woman’s Weekly). It makes me love Sydney even more than usual.
