I saw Bret Easton Ellis at The Oxford Art Factory tonight. He was there to promote his latest book Imperial Bedrooms, the sequel to Less Than Zero.
My expectations were rock bottom after reading that in his last appearance he refused to answer questions about the book and instead talked, at length, about his new found crush on Delta Goodrem. I felt nervous for the host Dom Knight (author of Disco Boy and Comrades) because it seemed pretty likely that BEE was going to be a massive brat.
Like many people we purposely missed the first part of the evening where 80's band The Models played and arrived when all of the kids with over grown fringes and heavy-framed glasses (and one guy dressed as Patrick Bateman) had taken their positions at the front of the stage.
There was a box for you to put questions in for Bret and I'd had about seven glasses of wine so I jotted a couple down.
When Bret arrived he was in a great mood. I don't know if he'd done a few lines or just woke up on the right side of bed but he was really warm and funny. My (lame) questions were the first two pulled out of the box! One about his easiest and most difficult books to write ("the shortest one and the longest one") and another one about Delta that I really shouldn't have written but I mentioned all that wine, right?
The highlight of the night was an awesome story he told about living in the same building as Tom Cruise when he was writing American Psycho. They met each other just once in the lift (this exact scene happens with to main character in the book). He said that if he was writing that situation today it would be Patrick Bateman who would be the nervous one ie Tom Cruise is now more psycho that the world's most famous literary psycho.
The audience clapped, laughed and heckled the whole time and he told lots of great anecdotes and touched on most of his books. He mentioned several times that he'd come to Australia to meet "hot people who drank a lot" and he did spend most of his question time really staring out in to the crowd and studying peoples faces (speaking of which his face is full of Botox and doesn't move a lot.)
I expected the worst but it was definitely an interesting night. Bret said he was going home to his hotel to take some Xanex and get some sleep.
