Never Let Me Go

Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro was the first book we ever read at our book club and it was overwhelmingly unpopular. It did, however, get a Booker nomination and was described by Time as "the novel of the decade" so perhaps we were all really wrong.

At first I was convinced I was going to like it because Ishiguro is Japanese and let's be honest most things from Japan are awesome. It does have a truly fascinating premise that is slowly revealed; the three central characters (at first in an English boarding school and later in an isolated cottage) are clones that were created so that their healthy organs can be farmed to save human lives. There are people falling in love, but basically it's just about as bleak as it sounds.

After watching the trailer for the new film (staring Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan) I think of it more fondly. I think it looks pretty great and I imagine I won't be saying, "I think the book was better" as I shuffle up the aisle afterwards.
