Most Friday nights my friends and I got to an old mans pub in Surry Hills and drink schooners. Last week I got everyone to commit to writing down their three favourite books (not right there, while drunk, though this now strikes me as an even more interesting idea.) It’s Hon’s turn first. Hon is a graphic designer who can do magic tricks and looks awesome in glasses though he doesn’t wear them so much any more. In his spare time he and his friends make a fantastic zine that everyone should read called Beef Knuckles. You can read about here. These are his top three books of all time.
The Bluest Eye - Toni Morrison
"When I told my friends Sarah and Robbie that I love Toni Morrison they laughed at me and asked me if I also love the film ‘How Stella Got Her Groove Back’ (I’ve never seen it). I don’t care though, because I know my favourite rapper Mos Def loves Toni Morrison and even quoted her in one of his songs (Thieves In The Night by Black Star)."
Tekkon Kincreet - Matsumoto Taiyo
"I really love stories of adults acting like kids (Billy Madison) and kids acting like adults (Big). Tekkon Kincreet is a great comic because it has both these things. It’s also been made into an animated movie if you don’t like reading."
Guess How Much I Love You - Sam McBratney
"I know this is a kids book but I really love it because when I was 17 my girlfriend at the time bought it for me and I thought it was really cute."
